‘As a Harbor Master and Pier Manager, I deal directly with ocean planning on a micro scale. I tend to a harbor facility that is in the middle of a highly valued and protected ecosystem and I have to continually balance the needs of the people using the harbor with the protection of the surrounding marsh and ocean. Kennebunkport and Cape Porpoise Pier ara a snapshot of the broader picture, which is the interactions and impacts of humanity upon the natural resource which is our oceans. Large scale ocean planning is the macro to my micro, but the intent to preserve and protect while at the same time utilizing and making advantageous use of the resource remains a constant. Across the board, from locally to statewide to regionally and globally, ocean planning impacts range from shipping and commerce to commercial fishing, bird watching to waterfront development and everything in between. The need to promote sustainable and responsible growth, while maintaining a commitment to the environment is paramount, and ocean planning is the key.’
