‘My husband and I own and run Cedar Island Oyster Farm and take pride in the fact that we are part of the growing aquaculture industry here in Rhode Island. Our operation goes from baby oysters (or spat) to adult oysters that are ready to harvest and includes three separately leased sites. While the oysters grow they serve as natural filter feeders, enhancing the water quality. Our oyster farm is a sustainable business that both relies on and contributes to clean water.
We operate in an area that is heavily used, especially for recreation so we recognize that there can be competition for marine spaces. Smart planning can enable us to find in-water locations to do business, which is not only good for our industry peers and us, but also good for the environment and Rhode Island’s economy.
Our three daughters also spend time working on our oyster farm. As a farmer, it’s very fulfilling to teach the next generation the value of sustainable farming and how we can positively impact the environment. Cedar Island Oyster Farm is truly a family business.’
