J World Annapolis has been providing coaching and instruction to new and experienced sailors from around the world for over 20 years. Based in Annapolis, Maryland – a city that any many would consider to be the sailing capital of the U.S., we understand the importance this sport has to coastal communities, especially in terms of their economies and culture.

As a professional mariner, I have seen our waterways getting busier over the years. Shipping and commercial traffic, aquaculture farming, recreational boating and fishing, renewable energy and defense operations are just a few sectors which are continuing to grow, and often overlapping one another. Having the tools to map out the areas where folks sail, whether it be for recreation or for racing, will be vital to maintain the traditions of the sport and safety of the sailors as we work to coexist with these various other uses.

The regional planning bodies formed under the National Ocean Policy provide a forum for the sailing community to be heard by not only state and government officials, but other ocean users as well. A better understanding of where and how we use the ocean helps us better coordinate with other users to safely and effectively coincide.”

Why We Need Ocean Planning

The ocean and coasts are active places, and we’re putting more demands on them every day. Think about it: traditional uses such as fishing, boating, shipping, recreation, and tourism are all changing and expanding, and at the same time we’re pioneering new industries alongside them like wind energy and sand mining. Ocean planning is about thinking ahead and planning for how to make it all work. Otherwise, we put the ocean’s vast, yet fragile, resources at risk. Voluntary ocean planning allows us to coordinate all these uses in a way that benefits our economy, our communities, and ocean health. Ocean planning is a science-based and data-driven process that provides a tool for people and government to work together, share information and solve problems in a way that works for everyone. Ocean planning helps to identify and resolve potential conflicts early on, helping decision makers and stakeholders in both the private and public sectors do their jobs better. This creates better outcomes for everyone, supporting a healthy ocean and vibrant economy
