‘Maine is famous for its 3,500 miles of coastline that boasts prosperous ports, safe harbors and quaint New England charm. What people don’t see are the jutting rocks, hidden shoals, and jagged reefs, all of which create a dangerous passage for mariners and tourists alike. As Pilots, it is our responsibility to aid ships in and out of our Ports and waterways. This becomes ever more complicated as our oceans become more and more crowded. I have seen firsthand the growing competition between new and existing uses near our ports and harbors and can consequently see the value that regional ocean planning may have in reducing unnecessary conflict and enhancing maritime safety. Ensuring the safe navigation of maritime commerce through our waterways should be a priority to regional maritime planning efforts.’
